Massachusetts National Guard members ran the Army Ten-Miler road race in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 9, 2011. The 10-mile road race is one of the largest 10-mile races in the world and is the Army’s premier running event.

The race course begins and ends at the Pentagon and runs through the Nation’s Capitol.  The mission of the Army Ten-Miler is to promote the Army, build espirit-de-corps, support fitness goals and enhance community relations.

The ATM had 30,000 registered runners this year which came from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.  Sixty-three percent of the runners are Active Duty, Guard, Reserve, retired military, veterans, military family dependents or Department of Defense employees.  Nearly 300 individuals were registered from Massachusetts.

The ATM route began next to the Arlington National Cemetery and The Pentagon.  The route passed by sites such as The Pentagon Memorial, The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, National World War II Memorial, The Washington Monument, The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, U.S. Capitol, and crossed the Arlington Memorial Bridge and George Mason Memorial Bridge.  The course finished at The Pentagon.

ATM is sponsored by agencies such as Kellogg Brown and Root, Adobe, GEICO, Dell Corporation, and the Navy Federal Credit Union. All ATM proceeds go to Army Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR).

There are 13 locations overseas hosting official ATM sponsored Shadow Runs; over 4,000 runners combined total.  ATM Shadow Runs were conducted in the following locations: Afghanistan: Camp Clark, Forward Operating Base Wolverine, Camp Phoenix, Bagram Airfield, Camp Eggers, Kandahar, Forward Operating Base Pasab, Forward Operating Base Fenty.
