Mass Guard recognizes tax preparation and financial planning volunteers

Commander’s Award for Public Service 
WELLESLEY, Mass. Mrs. Denise Komenda receives the Commander’s Award for Public Service, from Col. Sterling Macleod, Director of Personnel, Massachusetts National Guard, during a ceremony at the Massachusetts National Guard’s Military & Family Support Center, here, June 1, 2011.

Her citation reads, “Mrs. Komenda distinguished herself by volunteering to participate in the free tax preparation program, expertly providing much needed tax services to scores of Soldiers and their families. Mrs. Komenda served as Program Coordinator of the free tax preparation program throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, resulting in the production of over one thousand returns and resulting in significant savings to servicemembers, families and veterans. Mrs. Komenda was indispensible in the positive experience had by all taxpayers using the free tax preparation services.  Through her high level of service to servicemembers, their families, and veterans, Mrs. Komenda has performed in an exemplary manner, brought great credit upon herself, the Massachusetts National Guard and the United States Army.”

Also receiving the Commander’s Award for Public Service were;

Mr. John Jonathan Harrington, CFP, Personal Financial Counselor, Joint Family Support Assistance Program;

Mr. Craig Zuckerman, CPA, Tax Program Volunteer;

Mr. Hal Estabrook, Pro Bono Financial Planning Volunteer.

Specialists Jeffrey LaPointe and John Shaughnessy received the Army Commendation Medal for their work in the tax preparation program.   

A total of 51 volunteers assisted Servicemembers and their families with tax preparations and financial counseling. In addition to traveling to 37 events across the Commonwealth to meet with Servicemembers and their families, these volunteers completed 1.054 Federal and State tax returns saving Servicemembers and their families $177,000 in tax preparation fees.
