Medal of Liberty Presentation 
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -  Maj. Gen. Joseph C. Carter, The Adjutant General, Massachusetts National Guard presents the Massachusetts Medal of Liberty to Joseph and Karen Kelley, parents of Sgt. Michael Kelley, at a Gold Star Mothers event held at the Lawrence Airport here, Sept. 26, 2010. Kelley was killed in action in Afghanistan on June 8, 2005.

The newly created Medal of Liberty, open to all branches of the service, is awarded in the name of the Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as Commander-in-Chief of the Commonwealth to any Massachusetts service man or woman killed in action or who died as a result of wounds received in action. This event marked the first time the Medal of Liberty has been presented to families of Massachusetts service members.

Surviving family members requesting retroactive awards of the Medal of Liberty must apply for the award through the Office of The Adjutant General, 50 Maple Street, Milford, MA 01757. For more information and a copy of the application please use this link.
