MILFORD, Mass. – The Massachusetts National Guard was received the 2011 National Guard Bureau State/Joint Force Headquarters Excellence in Diversity Award for the third consecutive year during the annual National Guard Diversity Conference held in Reno, Nevada May 31, 2012.
Gen. Craig R. McKinley, Chief, National Guard Bureau presented the award to Mr. Thomas W. Desmond, State Equal Employment Manager/Diversity Officer, for the third consecutive year. The award recognizes superior performance and significant contributions in the area of diversity.
The Massachusetts National Guard was recognized as a top performer and employer of choice in the commonwealth as well as for having a viable and active Joint Diversity Executive Council and Community Outreach program that increased partnerships, cooperation and National Guard recognition. Accepting the award with Desmond were Lt. Col. Karin Killeen, Air National Guard; 1st Lt. Randy Mendoza, Asian-Pacific Islander Employment Manager and State Command Chief.
The Massachusetts National Guard Diversity Program is coordinated through the efforts of the Joint Diversity Executive Council (JDEC). The JDEC is made up of representatives from the Army and Air National Guard and is co-chaired by Brig. Gen. Paul G. Smith, Assistant Adjutant General and Desmond. The JDEC meets quarterly to discuss diversity issues, community outreach events and the recruitment and advancement of women and minorities within the Massachusetts National Guard.
