"Topping Off Ceremony"
U.S. Army photo by Sgt. Jerry Saslav, Massachusetts National Guard Public Affairs

BEDFORD, Mass.
– Norm Jackson reaches for the signed structural beam, as Al Martin watches, before it is bolted into place as part of the Massachusetts National Guard’s new Joint Force Headquarters building at Hanscom AFB as part of the “Topping Off Ceremony,” here, Dec. 9, 2010. The “Topping Off Ceremony” is, a tradition in the construction industry, when the last major piece of steel is placed during construction. The steel beam is painted white with an American Flag placed on one end of the beam, a traditional symbol of good luck, and a small tree placed on the other, a symbol of that no injuries occurred during the construction process, and is signed by the structure’s new owners, dignitaries and the construction crew.
