HOPKINTON, Mass. – Sgt. Matthew R. Chalifoux, a native of Spencer, an infantryman with C Company, 181st Infantry Regiment, Massachusetts Army National Guard, prepares to fire the starting gun for the second wave of runners in the 2012 Boston Marathon, April 16, 2012. Chalifoux, a Purple Heart recipient and veteran of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom was injured when an improvised explosive device detonated while on patrol in Paktika Province, Afghanistan.
