Military Records Branch
The Military Records Branch is currently located in Milford, it's mailing address is P. O. Box 309, Milford, MA 01757.  The office was moved from its previous location in to this site in 2004.  The Military Records Branch was previously known as the War Records Section.  What follows is a brief overview of the services provided by this office:

Maintains copies of active duty discharges, DD Form 214, for residents, beginning in 1940, for the following periods:

  • 1940-1947
  • 1950-1955
  • 1958-1973

(The “hard” copies of these discharges were collected as part of the payment process for state war bonuses, which were paid to veterans of World War II, Korea, and the Vietnam wars.)

More recently (1980 to present), discharges have been collected from all active duty service.

Maintains copies if all discharged Massachusetts Army and Air National Guard personnel from 1947 to present.  Some recent Army National Guard records are still maintained by the ARNG, but will be transferred to this office at some future date.

Most records have been placed into a database, which greatly streamlined the retrieval process.  Our personnel can locate a veteran’s records, then FAX, e-mail or mail them within a very short time – a great improvement over the previous hard copy filing system.

The office maintains a web site, accessible by authorized Veterans Agents, funeral homes, or government agencies, which lets these offices search our database for records.  This is of great use to these clients, as many Veterans Agents are part-time or work only during the evening, also to funeral homes that may need records during weekend or holiday periods when the office is not staffed.

Our goal is to provide the best support possible to the veterans we service.  The Military Records Branch may be contacted by phone at (508) 233-7780, -7781, -7782, or -7783; DSN 256 followed by the above extensions, by e-mail at military.records@state.ma.us, or FAX at (508) 233-7785.

Please keep in mind that wartime records prior to 1940 (World War I, Spanish American War, Civil War, etc.) are maintained at the Massachusetts National Guard Military Museum and Archives located at 91 Everett St, Concord, MA  01742 .  The facility is open Monday thru Friday from 8 A.M. to 4 P.M.  The telephone number is 978-369-4807.
